[...] Song: City Lights [ft. UGK] Artist: Method Man & Redman Album: Blackout! 2 Label: Def Jam Producer: unknown Notes: none Analysis: The second song to leak from Red & Meth’s upcoming sequel to their 1999 classic switches things up and goes the Southern route. Featuring the two Texas hip hop legends Bun B and the late Pimp C (although Pimp C is only present through the song’s sample), the duo pretty much confirms that Blackout! 2 will sound absolutely nothing like the original, but will be every bit as dope. Redman’s verse starts off a little shaky by using some played-out metaphors (rollin’ in my ride / my eyes real chinky), but recovers quickly once he gets into his groove, even rapping two bars in autotune. Method Man slows his own flow down a little bit also to better suit this drowsy beat, but Bun B ends up overshadowing two of my favorites on this track, probably because he feels the most at home over the instrumental. This album is a long time in the making, so I know that Red & Meth have some more good shit in store for us, and ‘City Lights’ is just another tasty treat.
